August Tournament News

Congratulations to Gary Burns for winning the August Tournament held on Lake Greenwood at Buzzards Roost Landing. Gary brought 2 fish to the landing for the tournament weighing in at 5.14 lbs. and had the tournament Big Fish of 4.10 lbs.

The lake level and water flow was lower than normal which appeared to have a negative affect on the fish. Anglers saw several large fish floating dead on top of the water. Few fish were caught which made it a slow day. High temperatures made for a longer day where many anglers would have found better things to do.

Although the water levels are still low, all of the anglers returned to the to ramp safely. Anglers reported that they caught a few fish during the night hours but the fish really started biting just after daylight.

During the August 11th meeting the club voted to grant meeting points to a few members who attended the Town Creek Club meeting because of conflicting schedule. This was a one time points issue and will not be granted in the future. When there is a conflict of meeting dates and times, then the members may decide to attend parts of both or reschedule one or both meeting times to accomodate attendance. With this exception of the rules for this one tournament, it was decided to grant all participants who attended the meeting and all of the members who fished the tournament meeting points.
There was also an error made on the July meeting points by granting only 5 points for the meeting instead of 10 points. This has been corrected and YTD results have been posted for July and August. I apologize for the error.

Members of the Midland Valley Christian Anglers Club fished out of the same ramp and I enjoyed seeing other Christian Bass Anglers showing their support and building fellowship with other clubs.

The 13th Anual Millbrook Christian Anglers Awards Banquet was held on October 15th at Millbrook Baptist Church.

A great meal was provided along with special music by Robert Howard.
Dr. Grady McElmurray delivered a moving devotion regarding the condition of our Country and it's leadership. He also challeged all of the members to a call for missions in our own home town.
As one of the newest members, Rickey Overman shared his observations and a story of one trip with his Dad. He shared that his Dad had especially enjoyed the prayer on the water before the blast off and agian after weigh-in at the landing. He noticed that this club was a very open, accepting of new people and visitors.

Once again Stan Harmon brought us all to laugh at ourselves for some of the silly and sometimes unconventional things we do while fishing for bass.

Houston Brown was awarded First Place Champion as the points leader and "Angler of the Year" for the most weight for the year.

Jim Caldwell had the Big Fish for the year weighing in at 7-04 lbs.

Marilyn and Elzie Peals presented Harry Harmon with the "Hank Drawdy Award" for displaying the most Christ like qualities during the year.

Derrick Murray was presented with the First Place Trophy for the Youth division.

Special thanks to many of the members and their wives for helping to coordinate and prepare the banquet. Due to their willingness to volunteer their time, it allowed the club to make donations to the Mission Fund and to the College Mission Fund.

One Millbrook's Own Pairs up to Win the Tournament of Champions Team Tournament at Lake Guntersville Alabama !
Don Nesbitt paired with Tim Cody to win the Tournament of Champions Team Tournament sponsored by Champion Boats.
Here's what Don had to say....
To all,   This past week-end my pursuit of little green fishies turned into the BIG WIN that I wondered if I'd ever experience.  I went down to Lake Guntersville Alabama to fish a Tournament of Champions Team Tournament.  I fished with Tim Cody from Tenessee and new found fishing friend (we met on the internet and had fished together one other time).  Anyway Tim and I were able to find some fish (and catch them for a change for me).  On Saturday we had 16.91 lbs which was good for 5th place going into day 2 when we brought a sack to the scales of a little over 19 lbs to win by 4 oz or so.

The Interview

All of our fish were caught on plastic frog/rat baits thrown and fished on big mats of millfoil grass.  This is a very exciting kind of fishing (topwater) because the strikes are so visible.  We would set the hook and battle the fish through, over, under the matted grass.  Anyway sorry to load you email box with such large photos, I hope that you enjoy them.

Peace and God Bless, Don

A fine fall day was the setting for the kick off of the 2003-2004 Tournament Schedule where the early morning cool gave way to the warm sun by afternoon. A lot of fish was caught during the day even though the bigger fish eluded the anglers. Scott Rhodes caught the big fish for the tournament weighing 3 lbs 12 oz.
Most of the fish was caught on small crank baits, floating worms and small spider jigs at the back of the pockets in shallow water.

A few years ago I had the priviledge of fishing the PVA Bass tournament on Clarks Hill at the Fort Gordon Recreation area. It was a two day event where the boats and non-boaters (Vets) fished the first day as a team event and then the boat served as a guide for his partner the second day. It was one of those rare opportunities that I was blessed with and shall remember always. The tournament was first class from the pre-fish meeting to the final awards dinner. I remember my partner tied on a Super Spook at the first stop of the day and used a 7 foot rod to launch the lure at least 100 yards (or it seemed). As he began retrieving the lure I remember thinking to myself, this will never work under these conditions. About five feet from where the retrieve began the water exploded with a splash that seemed to rock the boat. I looked back at my partner and the rod was bent in half and my first thought was "he's got a striper". His lure was so far out away from the boat I made another cast waiting for him to bring the fish closer so I could net it for him. Just a few seconds later he said "I think I'm hung". I turned to look back at him and immediately a fish (that looked to be in the 8 pound rage) jumped just a few feet behind my motor and spit the lure out. My partner was still holding the rod tight as he looked where the fish had been and spotted his lure drifting in the water a few feet from the boat. He turned his head towards me and with a calm voice said I think that's my lure. I didn't know what to say, so I told him let's re-tie and try it again. It only took him a few minutes to pull in his line while I netted his lure. He re-tied and made the same cast. Again, after moving the bait only a few feet another explosion occured and the fight was on. This time he landed the fish and it weighed in at 4 lbs. 3 oz. second big fish for the day. It began raining and the rest of the day was a challege for any fisherman, but my partner refused to go back to the landing. We continued to fish a few rocky points I know and he managed to learn how to catch three more fish on a Carolina Rig. He finished one place out of the money, but I still remember how happy he was because he said that was the most fish he had ever weighed in at a PVA tournment before.
It was the best $50.00 I ever spent fishing.

The tropical depression kept a cloud cover all day with cooler than average temperature for late July.
this provide a much appreciated break in the heat for the anglers. The fish proved to be more elusive for some of the fishermen who fished the upper section of the lake. The anglers who traveled to the mid to lower end of the lake found fish around the weed beds.

04/19/2003 Clark Hill Tournament

The April tournament was held Saturday the 19th at the Parksville Landing on Clarks Hill Lake at Thurmond Dam. Parksville Landing is located on the South Carolina side of the lake near Parksville, SC.
Clouds and cooler tempetures threatened rain early but managed to hold off until the sun broke through with rising tempetures in the afternoon. It felt more like a fall morning that early spring. The cold front which pushed through late Friday lingered until late morning making the bite some what slower than in practice.
The club had 21 boats and 42 members fishing the tournament which matches our previous record. A total of 4 limits was weighed in, with some good fish being brought to the scales.

03/22/2003 Clark Hill Tournament

The March tournament was held Saturday the 22nd at the Parksville Landing on Clarks Hill Lake at Thurmond Dam. Parksville Landing is located on the South Carolina side of the lake near Parksville, SC.
A perfect spring day is the only way to describe the weather. Brisk morning air, lots of sunshine and just a little breeze to keep it from getting too warm. I for one was ready for such a day after several tournaments held in rainy, stormy weather.
With this back drop the club had a excellent turn out. A couple of limits were caught but with about half of the anglers finding a few fish, others found it hard to find a pattern. Those who did not catch fish found it a joy just to be on the lake on such a nice day.
The majority of the fish were caught in 5 to 6 feet on Carolina Rigs using lizards. Some anglers found fish hitting small crank baits (I heard shad raps).

Congratulations to the top five:
Barry Beasley won with 5 fish weighing in with 10-13 lbs.
Elzie Peals took second with 5 fish weighing 8-10 lbs. with big fish of 4-3 lbs.
Larry Young had 3rd with 2 fish weighing 6-15 lbs. with big fish of 5-4 lbs.
Brandon Stooksbury finished 4th with 4 fish weighing 6-14 lbs.
Mark Day had 1 fish weighing 2-15 to take 5th place.

02/22/2003 Clark Hill Tournament

The February tournament was held Saturday the 23th at the Hawe Creek Landing on Clarks Hill Lake at Thurmond Dam. Hawe Creek Landing is located on the South Carolina side of the lake near McCormick, SC.
The threat of thunder storms was in the air which proved to be inevitable. The rain held off until the tournament was well under way, as most of the anglers hoped the storm would skirt around us. By late morning the rain settled in a steady and constant downpour. The storm would prove to be more than even an avid die hard angler would endure. As the storm rolled in with gusts of 45 mph all of the anglers were forced to find some type of shelter to protect them from the sharp lightning. The worst of the storm blew over in about 2 hours. The anglers were able to salvage about 3 hours of fishing during the afternoon to finish out what most considered to be a rough but memorable day. As with any tournament some anglers find fish and this tournament was no different. Although no one caught a limit there were a few good strings at the weigh in.

Don Nesbitt won with 4 fish weighing in with 8-9 lbs.
Robin Dillman took second with 2 fish weighing 5-6 lbs with big fish of 4-3 lbs.
Larry Young had 3rd with 1 fish weighing 3-10 lbs.
Harry Harmon finished 4th with 3 fish weighing 3-4 lbs.
Ken Boyle had 1 fish weighing 2-15 to take 5th place.

The next meeting is scheduled for 6:30pm on Thursday, March 20th at Millbrook Baptist Church. Our next tournament is scheduled for March 22nd on Clarks Hill Lake at Thurmond Dam at Parksville Landing at Parksville, SC. The tournament time will be voted on at the meeting.
